In ages long forgotten,
Coyote stood
In the center,
Treating all who came
To great feasts.

No longer…
Now he cries at night
And calls to full moon
Looking for all
He has lost
As he wanders…

When the days of ice came,
Coyote moved
Closer to the people
So he could feel
The warmth of fire

At first he was welcomed
By the people,
For they had stolen
His shadow in days
Long past,
But, as days passed and
Mountains of ice grew
On the landscape
There was less to share

Coyote, now cut off
From his old friends by
Impassable walls of ice
And his promise never
To again stand in the center
Of all things
Had no where
To turn for help but
His wits

So he became the trickster.
Stealing in and out of
Camps at night to find
Bits and parts of what
Others left behind

Always he cried,
His tears adding to the
Layers of ice,
His wails reminding
The people of
Their own treachery
And they began to despise him.

Cunning as he has become,
Coyote has lost his true form
And is hunted for
What he reminds us of.
