There were not very many,
At the funeral that day.
When we lay old A. C. Connor-
Underneath the Texas clay.

I guess that he’d outlived them all,
His saddle pards and such.
And in the eyes of most the folks…
He didn’t count for much.

We placed a rolled-up gunbelt-
Not far from his right hand.
He’d worn very proudly,
When he helped to tame our land.

And a ring of Mex’can silver-
We pinned upon his vest.
Engraved with “Texas Ranger”-
He’d been one of the best.

We lay a piece of history…
To rest that somber day.
A slave to his sworn duty…
He never ran away.

His like are quickly fading-
I wonder what we’ll do,
When duty calls or danger…
Who’ll stand for me and you?

"Who’ll stand for me and you?"
Very good question. I know there are those who still believe in protecting the people. Just seems to be harder to find them now a days.
