My Mother used to worry-
About the life we led...
She often told me tearfully,
That we would wind up dead.

The fast cars, and the whiskey-
The beer joints and the guns...
Looking back, I can?t believe,
We used to call that fun.

A lot of tears and hard knocks,
Are mile posts on that road.
And a sad and guilty conscience-
Makes for a heavy load.

It seems my friends and family-
Are names upon some stone.
I never thought I?d live so long,
That I would be alone.

But drinking can be suicide-
I guess I learned that late...
My mother died so tired and old,
And only fifty-eight.

My brother died at forty-
A coward shot him down...
You know? I really can?t believe-
That I am still around.

I guess I?ve learned my lesson-
For I no longer drink...
And now before I make a move-
I take the time to think.

I did my share of foolishness,
As down life?s road I?ve trod.
But back in nineteen eighty-one,
I made my peace with God.

I am sure God walks beside you! Great poem!

I have, I've walked that road each time; that's where my angel sleeps

Gunslinger-
   This is wonderful!
Such a positive ending, and a
   very promising new beginning..
   This one speaks volumes.

He is the only one you have to answer to.
Take care of yourself and we'll be reading your work for a long time to come.

I can picture Mike Ness singing these words.  Very matter-of-fact, but thought provoking in a lyrical way.
