He rode atop,
a buckskin mare,
into town,
from who knows where.
Six guns strapped,
low on his hips,
as whispers flowed,
from townfolks' lips.
Rawhide chaps,
black Stetson hat,
past the jail,
where sheriff sat.
The sheriff stared,
at stranger's face,
checked wanted posters,
just in case.
Without a beard,
he just might be,
rose from his chair,
to check and see,
as headed down,
town's wooden walk,
said not a word,
there was no talk.
His eyes stayed on,
the stranger's back,
while stranger rode,
all dressed in black.
Was not a sound,
'cept horse's feet,
amid the dust,
of noonday heat.
Then sheriff yelled,
"Dakota Joe!"
the stranger's horse,
began to slow.
Then in a flash,
the stranger turned,
and from his hands,
twin fires burned.
He was too late,
the sheriff's gun,
had fired first,
no time to run.
A woman screamed,
the menfolk ran,
to the side,
of fallen man.
Dead or alive,
the poster read,
from sheriff's mouth,
"I guess it's dead."
Beneath a hot
and cloudless sky,
Dakota Joe,
did up and die.

I see the last four lines on the tombstone no less....

now, 'fess up....is that where the inspiration came from?  I've been to Dodge!....

You seem to have a knack for telling a good yarn, great work!

Mike~
Took me on a 'giddy-up' right through this one.
Nice story-telling.

There's been a time or two that I thought having that 'Old West' kind of justice would have been the way to go...Excellent tale, Mike!
