"My Dad"
My siblings protest,
and tell me,
I always say his name that way.
As if they weren't important, had no part
of his dear memory.

I smile and deny, but secretly,
I must agree.
I, his first daughter after four loved sons,
confident of the place,
I held in this man's heart.

Quiet, gentle man.
Scratchy whiskers and work worn hands.
Cinnamon candies, secretly passed in church.
Tobacco plug held firmly in his cheek,
except on Sunday.

Breaking down.
Driving to town to buy another part
for a worn out tractor.
Never forgetting, not once,
to bring us our treat.

His deep voice,
never raised in anger to his family.
There was no need.  We knew,
we were always to obey this gentle man.
He worked so hard for us.

This dear, unselfish man, who loved us.

Joyce....alas, the title will likely prevent this wonderful poem from being widely read at "PASSIONS".....but this, more than most, meets the definition. Excellent poem.  Bob
