I Knew a Man

by Michael

I knew a man most all my life
A gentle spirit, he
Who made such lovely things of art
For all the world to see

So tender was this old man's heart
Such caring did he show
He welcomed everyone he met
And how they loved him so

He'd buy old bikes then fix them up
And make them look like new
Give them away to some poor child
These kinds of things he'd do

When he saw need in someone's life
His wallet opened wide
If someone hurt he'd hold them close
And dry the tears they cried

But life to him would not be kind
Most of it spent in pain
The doctors searched but could not find
The cause it seemed, not plain

The friends he'd thought who loved him so
Were nowhere to be found
Their visits less and less became
And then none came around

I know not what became of him
I've heard he moved away
To an old house at the ocean
At least that's what they say

Michael--a story full of the beauty of giving and the sad truth of being human.  Very well done, my friend!

Sometimes people just take and don't give back, shame on them.

Love it very much.

I know this man, I believe. Perhaps each community has such a man. We are so lacking in knowledge, and because of our fears of not knowing what to say, we sometimes stay away. For whatever reason, shame on us. Shalom

Michael~
I enjoyed the tender characterization you gave this.
Very nicely written.

Would you mind very much, Auguste, if I sent this in thought to my father? He has been gone some time now, but he was very much like this man here in your poem...

as today is my father's birthday, this was indeed, a timely read....and I don't mind telling you, today Dad feels very close to me...

thank you, good poet....
