Is madness the province of poets?
To be a poet. must you be mad?
Towering doubts – aching insecurities,
these are the price and prize of
our creativity.
What words, these, pushed from
the womb of the mind in
screaming defiance and determination.
Each one suckling at the teat of
its creator.
Refuse to be a poet. Deny, deny,
and the claws of your unfulfilled
thoughts will rake your mind into
furrows, deep and long.
Refuse to be mad. Refuse to
be run through a blender, only to
be spat out minus seeds and pulp.
Turn away and a hill of fire ants
will chew on your brain.
Pretend you live on coffee
and bagels at 3:00am.
Twist tie the poems, burn them.
It won’t matter. The poetry is on
your face in tattoos that speak of
the very thing that haunts you.

Mad indeed, as I often say writers are not schizo, we don't have aliases, we have psuedonyms. Well that is my excuse anyway. And surely the word has claimed many a night.

Thanks

I really enjoyed your perspective..........

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie

Much the same can be said of all the arts. I know NO sane musicians. None that are any good anyway. Good point, a little madness surely drives us all.
