It Rides the Backs of Crickets

by Michael

It dwells in darkest shadows during day
and rides the backs of crickets in the night.
In taunting whispers, tempts me go astray.
When found, I always drag it into light.

I am a man that has so little fear.
This thing will never rob me of the best.
Not once have I so much as shed a tear,
for I shall not be hampered on my quest.

In still of night while others sleep and dream,
it comes to me and laughs its hateful laugh.
I know that things are not what they would seem.
I draw the stars around me for a bath.

Refreshed again, I take my rightful place
and reach for those in tears, that I might hold.
This thing that rides on crickets has a face.
Its skin is gray and touch is icy cold.

“Away from me, I’ll crush your ugly bones.
My gentle spirit you will not possess.
I’ll smile and listen to your sobbing moans.
You will not take from me my happiness.”
