These Muddied Boots

~*Marge Tindal*~

Step by step this soldier trod
deep terrain of earthly sod
Fight for freedom sought with pride
borne on boots in purpose of stride

Through valley, jungle, desert sand
walked the measure of the man
Mine fields traversed, trenches of prey
traveled this soldier of yesterday

Of bodies returned - some lay unclaimed
Only his boots would know his name
Buried now in unmarked grave
unmindful of the freedom he gave

Somewhere in the Heavens tonight
He stands the watch where angels might
Soldier, as you stand at God's side
Know we remember you with pride

Always held so fondly remembered
These muddied boots to God now surrendered

"The beginning of the end of war lies in remembrance."
Memorial Day 2001

Margie girl this is utterly excellent, it's in the remembering that we can honour them.
This is utterly wonderful, your tribute is exquisite.

Gosh, gal... you're giving my tear ducts a workout today! *S* I was talking with my Dad Sunday morning... I know Memorial Day is for remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price... but I don't think we can ever thank our veterans enough. I didn't expect my simple "thank you" to bring such a rush of his memories... but for an hour, I madly scrambled trying to take coherent notes to preserve an unexpected gift of a window into the past. You've done that without even hearing his voice. *S* Superb!

GreenEyes~
Thank you ... the day was one of quiet reflection and appreciation.

SuthernGal~
Now you've given me tears.
I have heard his voice in the stories told by so many who only wanted to be asked to share their stories.

I'm so glad you had that wonderful window of opportunity with your dad.
Thank you for sharing with me.
