The Wall

I went to see the wall of fame
The tablets etched with soldiersí names
And there I hoped to touch a friend
And say hello to him again

In meloncholy sense of calm
I thought of those in Viet Nam
Who never found their way back home
Except in bits of teeth and bone

I made my way along the mall
And saw the black memorial wall
In view of Lincolnís watching eye
As mourners knelt or walked on by

They came here to fullfill the same
To find a brotherís hand carved name
And trace it with a scribbling pen
To prove we didnít forget a friend

They gathered near, but only saw
Reflections in the polished wall
The soldiers there engraved in stone
Were mirrors of the ones from home

And men who stood in tight embrace
As tears of sorrow filled their face
Not knowing one another well
But knowing they all served in hell

I watched them sob and say a prayer
And when they saw me standing there
They pulled me close and held me near
To share the grief of soldierís tear

The ones inscribed upon the wall
Looked out across the grounds in awe
At hundreds there who didnít forget
Who touched their names in sad regret

And there they saw their buddies weep
For those in Godís eternal sleep
We all turned round and face to face
The forty thousand  stood in place

Saluting us who humbly wept
And so we closer to them stepped
And saw reflections of our hands
Saluting each and every man

Within the mirrored wall of black
Were twenty men saluting back
To those who lost their lives in war
To honor them forever more

The wallís a simple quiet place
With those who died etched on its face
But only life does it reflect
As I recall in retrospect

In awe and hushed silence...(beautiful pen).

My faith is but the size my mustard seed. I'll turn the other cheek in my love for mankind - not pride.

my husband is one who, thankfully, is not on the wall but alive.  Well done.
