Hold No Illusions

by Michael

Romantic dreamer, this I know
And sensitive my spirit is
That all the women I call friends
Will often feel as they've been kissed

And kissed they have but by a friend
I love them in no other way
They fall in love with only words
And their hearts will break on that day

I cannot bear to see them hurt
Their pain will often bring my tears
And then I have lost this friendship
When I'd hoped it would last for years

So hard to tell them how I feel
Sometimes they just won't understand
My friends they are, that's all I feel
It's often hard to be a man

Can't they just love me as a friend?
A deeper love just ensures pain
A tortured heart I fear to mend
I've tried to make "just friendship" plain

So paranoid these days I feel
To me, my life are they a part
Their words, their beauty, oh so real
Perhaps I share too much my heart

I won't deny I love their warmth
Their scent and touch when we embrace
Their knowing eyes when they meet mine
Their tender skin upon my face

Though tempting, there just is no chance
That they will ever have from me
More tender words to soothe their hearts
A closer bond they will not see

I cannot give the best there is
To these dear ones I cherish so
My wife alone does know my kiss
And with but her I choose to grow

I pray there'll be no tears to weep
From my dear wife I will not part
So be my friend but distance keep
Hold no illusions in your heart

Yes...they can and should..and you should be commended for these words...

I cannot give the best there is
To these dear ones I cherish so
My wife alone does know my kiss
And with but her I choose to grow

wonderfully written and appreciated..at least by me..huggss to you for a very well written poem...of understanding the nature of poets..at least  on here.

Maureen/Wynter..I don't think I could have expressed it as well as you have.   and with a few changes could apply to men also

think I  shall save this just in case...

As a good friend once told me,(can't remember the exact wording) If I could accept friendship, good, if not it would be a loss for both. I changed it a little... because I DID choose friendship in the reality world. For that meant more to me than anything.  I hope yours does too, and seeing friendship being more important. OK, I'll get off my platform.  Good write.

You have an outstanding way of tenderly communicating what would usually come as a torrent to the hearts of anyone who would care for you. Devotion also shines through in this. A masterpiece of tenderness and honesty. I love it.

Michael, this is so well said, and a wonderful poem as well. Your heart sounds open and kind to me, just what a friend should appreciate.

Michael~
This is so poignantly done.
I couldn't help but think of this beautifully written song.

I've known the pain that friends can cost and I lost some I thought were dear to me.

It's selfnisness (don't know how to spell it) that cause them not to listen and those are not your real friends, believe me.

Touched my heart it did, Titia

Excellent poem, truly I would call it a masterpiece...
Looking forward for more...

Everyone,

Thank you for responding so favorably to this piece.  I cherish each friend I have and grow to love them, as you do your own.  I hope your Memorial Day weekend was a good one.

You said so beautifully what had to be said to a multitude of people.  Poetry is that which we write from our soul, first for ourselves, but it is wonderful people enjoy it.  However, sometimes readers forget we did not invite them into our hearts, they just assumed that path without asking.  You are a wonderful friend, and a great husband and father by the way!

That defines in words I cant explain exactly how I feel for many of my friends...If only my partner could understand. Good on ya for saying what you did
