Listening to every heart

Soddie Memories 1895, Nine

seven years have
swift, flown
as Canadian geese head
south on migration

only looking down for
patchy ponds
of blue to refresh

hawnking

mate with mate, mated for life

my thoughts
mix and merge
like threads connecting
quilt to batting
of this day
and that of
yestereve ~
warming me,
my sweet heart content
to know my place beside him
never jealous of what
was ~
such is an artist’s heart

so I still converse with you,
my love,
the cool winds are just now
bringing back
to me our first winter some
twenty-seven snows ago

our children having been the wheat
and corn in growth, tall and true
now harvesting their own
seed and you, my love
a grand-father
but fortunes were such that all
have moved on and away
for now ~ my nest is empty
but echoes remain
on the wind

yes, the chill is such this late
fall come winter’s eve that
I recall in vivid shiverings
the warmth of our soddie ~
you had listened well to
those who had come
before,
stripping willows
weaving them as pliable
they were
daubing generously of river mud
packing tight
all crevices

sad that this handiwork is
gone now
how were the first here to know
how long willow limbs
would not last
but long enough, oh yes,
long enough

to think that the one room
where our first born came
to light
in lamp’s flicker
as the storm raged outside to
match the one within,
oh, love, it
saddens me now and then
to know
that the birthing, dining, living,
sleeping room
is now reduced again to
the ground from which
it sprung

ah,

ashes to ashes, dust to dust

thank you for our years,
for your trust in my
hands
and in my heart,

for allowing this man to come
into my life,
as I had thought to go on in your
memory, alone with you,

but most of all, for
bringing me paper, quill and ink,

even in the lean years, and

for bringing to life my soul
here on the plains
here, with my face in the wind
for even now,
yes, love, even now,

threaded through the soft words
of my husband, comes my first
love’s whistling
still in the offing on the wind

and he never interrupts to question
why I
still stop to listen

but said “it is that smile
he still brings to your face,”
and for that, he
sends you his
thanks

and tells me that I should now,
and always

lift my chin and face the wind

Kari dear heart, from one to ten, how truly outstanding they all were. Yes I know I read ten before this nine, but oh the way you've woven this story, Kari it couldn't be beaten. I adore this love you are such a fabulous writer, truly utterly outstanding work.
Well done my sister phoenix, I love these, and I wish you would do another series soon
