Scent of Home
Virginia Salter

seeking shade
I slipped beneath a
‘wilding’ rose
one that has escaped pruning
and tlc, yet survives
in spite

there, I am carried away
transported almost five decades back
back to summer
when nine years old

to days
when, peanut-butter jar in hand,
ice-pick perforated lid at the ready,
daring beyond belief

sneaking, peeking, seeking
bumbles and honeys
to capture, because we could
in our daring

to days
when hikes across the grasses
bore no fear of the unseen
for it was met
within the outhouse
of what lurked beneath the ring

to days
when to and from school
were surely miles more than many
and butterfly wings
would carry us
much farther than any

moths
coated in pixie dust
were magical and grand
and gave no worry
of tree-bush
those bugs would find at hand

simple days
wondrous days
days for capturing of life
days when fairy princess
dreamed of being
prince’s wife

Oh such wonderful memories. ~Sigh~
How fun it would be to have no worries again.
Even if only for a day.

Thank you for taking us Back VAS!
I enjoyed it there.
Do you mind if I stay a while?

sigh, talk about being carried away... this one takes all who read back to the magical days of youth and innocence that are stripped from us all too soon.   Thank you for a beautiful piece.

I still do sometimes, hiding under the wild roses when I want to be alone for a while.
Never grew out of my childhood there.

Love it.
