Not So Simple

When I was growing up,
I didn’t appreciate
simplicity.
Summer days
were long and boring,
each like the next,
bright skies, sun so hot
I always rose early
to seek the ocean's cool breath;
or ride my bicycle
along a boardwalk that wrapped
from ocean to bayside;
noisy crowds fading
to the quiet tinkling
of sail masts;
tiny waves lapping
at my ankles
in the wake
of water skiers.

I didn’t worry
if I was loved,
or if there was enough money;
there was no traffic to fight
in my ’71 VW Bug,
which seemed to run forever
on one tank of gas.

I never felt lingering guilt,
nor did I give in
to depression;
maybe because I didn’t know
about such things
as post- traumatic stress syndrome,
or maybe I just snapped back faster,
because that’s what kids do.

Yes, that wonderful simplicity of childhood. You've expressed it well, Corinne!

Ohh..Cor..This makes my heart and soul ache for such times. Am I the only one who thinks childlike and childish are two different things..and that childlike is so much more endearing and beautiful..and non threatening to our maturity? Ohh..the way you make me think. I love this, Cor. I truly do.

Thank you, Kathleen and Denise. Childhood is such a precious time, and we don't realize how special until we're grown sometimes.

Thank you, Rosepetals, yes I remember that too, mom yelling our names out in the darkening sky!

Thank you Sy!

Temptress, so glad you liked this, much is lost, I think, in growing up, it's a shame, isn't it?

Sven, good question, wish I knew. Maybe we lose elastisity over the years from impacts...thank you.

corinne, this is wonderful, it struck me right. I always think about the difference between young and old...and wish I was young.
