Why Not?
Virginia Salter

Who is this
living on the outside,
living on the outside, looking in
Who is this
hiding all that’s inside,
letting the world see only her skin

A smile
a kind word
a simple, “Hello, how are you?”
When deep within
there’s miles of sin
and sadness, gloom and despair;
but what does she care

Why not be shallow
why not be vain
why not stand singing
out in the rain
why not cry teardrops
releasing the pain
why not, why not,
why not?

not autobiographical, as I recall, yet it certainly could be everyone's verse

Yes, it certainly could be, Virgina. Very well expressed.

Lord, knows I've shed enough of them lately, I should be gloriously happy!

Virginia, Sometimes it can take decades for pain to surface. It only does when we're prepared to deal with it
This touched a chord of my own sorrow

Thank you all for reading and responding.  Your words seem so candid and heartfelt.  I think this poem could touch everyone right where they live at least once if not several times.  If it were not so, He would not have had to come.

It's hard to show our insides to someone, and if we are disappointed it's almost devastating.
