As I Watch The Embers Fade

Am I shivering from the pain,
Or the coolness of spring’s chill?
The winds blow gently through my window,
On what seems a peaceful spring day,
When only moments before,
I had softly kissed my pillow.
To escape in mind's journey,
And I wandered away from the pain.
The leaves outside whisper softly in my ears,
Taking away my deepest fears.
I will the dreams of my soul to touch me.
In my mind, feelings of love and happiness rupture.
The warmth of heavens shine no more upon my face.
My heart so long searching,
Thought they had found friendship’s place.
With eyes shut tightly,
The bright sun no longer shines upon me.
Once again I awakened,
With consciousness slightly shaken.
Sadness passes through my heart as I remember,
The fire that once burned in my very soul.
I think of him,and I still smile.
He, so proud, who started the embers.
I can see through his mask,
Finding him now though,
Is no longer a hard task, but impossible.
Suddenly, I can no longer see his face,
Hear his gentle words,
For no longer is there a place for me in his heart.
Tears like shattered glass splinter my soul.
As I watch the last of the embers fade.
Saddened, I know I had to extinguish the fire,
For it withered my essence of being.
With tears swelling, I close the window,
Like another chapter in this never-ending
Book of life.

Nice touch though filled with sadness. Perhaps we are all passengers on the train that travels one way through a life. Passengers board and deboard at each station and the train continues its journey until we can no longer see it in the crossroad of the horizon.

"I am not now that which I have been."

How you brought back a recall that I had thought left behind: not quite 19, about to be married, the night before the nuptials, I could not see his face in my mind.  I told myself it was nerves.  I should have listened to my soul, and I should have gone looking, or waiting, for the face that I could see...

yes, a poem just about life, indeed.

Thank you.

You always seem to say just the right thing..and use just the right graphic to punctuate your words. This is beautiful...but sad....

Julian: Thanks for the comment, and you speak more truth that most people can comprehend.

Greeneyes: Thank you - when something dies, it is always extrelely tender and painful.

Lady in White: I relate to your experience, and now as I am older, I always listen to my inner voice and if it says it hurts, or doesn't feel right, I listen!  Thank you for reading this.

Interloper: Thank you!

Poet deVine: I try to say the right words, and find the graphic to further show the feelings in the poetry, I do thank you for your very kind comments.
