The Accidental Poet

by Michael

At nineteen I lost my first love
So badly broken was my heart
By accident I wrote a poem
Though it was not a work of art

Just pain on paper spilled from pen
Of how it hurt to lose her so
The poem did rhyme, but not too well
It seems young love's not meant to grow

I wrote and hid the words away
Lest someone look too deep inside
This sad, accidental poet
And know the tears that I had cried

Each time the hurt would come around
I'd take a pen and put to page
It soon became a therapy
A way to vent my pent-up rage

Today it's also therapy
By accident do I still write
And I, a therapist with pen
Most of my words penned in the night

No longer do I hide the tears
I bare my heart for all to see
You probe the depths and still don't know
That gentle child that lives in me

I actually wrote my first poem in the ninth grade as an assignment.  After reading it, my teacher said that it sounded too familiar, like she'd heard somewhere before.  She tore it up and gave me a failing grade.  I didn't write another one for five years.  Oh, and I had a huge crush on my biology teacher.  (still do)

and still, I try...

Auguste,

And know the tears that I had cried

You have just descibed the reason I write perfectly.     I think this poem says it all for most poets, accidental or otherwise.  Thanks for sharing   it was enjoyed!

Ah, Michael... you write me with these words... For without a pen to control the rage, I wouldn't have lived to an advanced age. But I was more fortunate than you... I had a teacher encourage me tremendously. Great writing... whether by accident or design, I'm sure glad you ARE a poet! *S*
