Sometimes I keep my heart
Strictly under lock and key
So that others cannot see
The person who is the real me

Sometimes I feel uncomfortable
In expressing the way I feel
But my writing has surely helped me
And made my feelings seem more real

Most of those who are close to me
Don't even know I write
I make a point of keeping
My pens and paper out of sight

Somewhat shy am I to reveal
My true feelings and inner self
Those things to some are fiction
From some book found upon a shelf

How surprised I think they'd be
If I let my feelings known
But for now I think I'm more comfortable
Keeping this part of me unknown

There's nothing wrong with keeping some things private until you are comfortable enough to share them. It's tough being shy and I'm sure writing does help express those things that you can't express face to face with others. Nice poem!

Sue,
I, too, feel this way. I think a number of poets feel the fear of sharing at one time or another or with some people. I think you did a good job with expressing this and you let us into the persona's world or your world. I, for one, thank you for sharing with us. Panne

I thank you all for your comments and I'm so glad that you are able to relate to how I feel.  I just feel a little awkward coming out to some people and saying "Guess what? I write poetry now."  I guess it's like I'm not sure how they will react or that they may laugh at me, it is really difficult to explain and I feel at ease sharing my innermost feelings with strangers though..does that make sense?? I hope it does.  Take care......Sue

Sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring out our creative side, and when it comes, it comes in a flood!  Let the water flow, cleanse your heart, and for now, we shall keep your secret safe (hugs).

I would imagine there are many times when those close to me wish I was a bit shier about my poetry.  I call myself 'poetlariat' because I try to rope people into reading my poetry.  However, I really do think one can improve by reading their poetry aloud and by hearing others read it and reveal how they see it.

You summed up my thoughts so perfectly.  I believe the death of my father and the grief I carried was what inspired me to start writing in February of this year and my first poem was about the love I had for my Dad.  You are so right when you say it is like the floodgates are opened up as to date I have written over 75 poems and that just astounds me.  Thank you for your kindness and interest in my writing......Sue

Sometimes I wish I could just come out and lay out my work for my friends to see but I'm just too reserved to do that and am very selective as to who I show my work too.  I wish I was more like you in that regard. Thank you for reading and commenting on this.....it means a lot to me.
Take care......Sue

this hits so close to home, it is uncanny, often my family and friends don't know or pay little attention to my writing, which may explain why Passions is so important to me.

I can also relate to this well expressed poem.  Most around me don't know that I write.  I don't freely share my writings with everyone....just a few and of those few, I know, some of them wonder about me.LOL

Same here, I wrote a lot of poems when my husband suffered from severe depressions for several years. Later on when he was recovered, he was the only one who read them. Here on Passions, among friends who would understand, I could dare to share them, but they are written in Dutch and therefore difficult to translate.

Thank you for sharing with us.

I am truly overwhelmed by the response to this poem and if makes me feel more at ease to know that I'm not alone in my feelings. I guess there are just some people who you don't feel comfortable sharing your innermost thoughts.  I am so grateful that I have found many warm, wonderful responses here at Passions and I feel it is like my second home.  Thank you all for making me feel so welcome.  Kind regards......Sue

Dear Sue:  I really can understand your feelings.  I have written most of my long life, but it wasn't until just a few years ago, I began letting anyone outside my family see my work. Most of the people who know me, are not aware that I write, even yet. I enjoy sharing with other poets, because there is a depth of understanding in the poetic community, not found in others. I'm glad that you share your work here. It is very worthwhile.
