Our Golden Footprints

by Michael

I am not a great man,
but I’m a good one.
There is nothing special about me,
but I have grown to know
certain truths in my walk
along the way
and would like to share them.

Each of us has only so many steps
upon this earth
before our footprints
are erased by winds and rain.

Each day
we should cause someone to smile,
hold a child’s hand
and teach a good lesson.

Each day
we should turn the television set off
for awhile, learn something new,
offer a helping hand
to a friend, neighbor, complete stranger.

Do we owe the poor
and broken in spirit anything?

We that are so blessed
owe them respect
and the best of ourselves.

In youth
I worked with the mentally retarded
and would come home each night and cry.
I would thank God for a healthy mind.

There is gold within each of us
and we can never give it all away.
It is there to be shared
and the giving only causes it to be replenished.

We fear to trust,
so fail to learn.
We fear to love,
so go unloved.
We fear to believe,
so live a life of lies.

Before my footprints are swept away
and lost to unremembered time,
it is my goal to share of that goodness,
that gold,
to touch the lives of those around me,
to extend my hand in kindness and truth.

and we too extend our hands to you. . . so that we might repay the gold that you have given to others. . .

excellent Michael. . .

Michael--You are a good man...and a wise one...and a poet with much heart!  I enjoyed the whole poem, but these lines especially:

"There is gold within each of us
and we can never give it all away.
It is there to be shared
and the giving only causes it to be replenished."

Thanks for being you.

Lady In White,
I want to thank you for stopping by to read this piece.

Mysteria,
You're very sweet and I'm glad I was of some help.  Thank you.

Sven,
And I take your hands...thank you, my friend.

Brad,
Thank you for the nice comments.  Yes, I'll continue on this path, because this is the one I chose many years ago.

Elizabeth Anne,
Thank you for reading and enjoying, my friend.

Martie,
There truly is gold within us all, if we'd only share of it, my friend.  I've seen the gold within you, as I know others have. Thank you.

Melton,
Thanks for the nice words.  Yes, isn't it really that, attitude?  You sound like you've a good one also.

Sudhir,
I'm glad you liked this and I appreciate your nice response, sir.

I don't think that Michael's footprints will ever diminish!  He touched SO many lives here as well as all over this great planet!  I know I was extremely blessed to know him!!  Glad I found this one...hadn't read it before.   Thought I would bring it back to the surface and share with those that maybe hadn't read it either.

God bless you all!!  --  Becka
