Sittin’ Barefoot
Virginia Salter

Sittin’ barefoot
cool air bathing my toes, arches and heels
recalling memories of innocence
when I knew less
of what was lurking in the soils
in the sands
in the grasses
when only itinerant bees
rough-edged pebbles
might be awaiting misplaced steps.

With each passing year
more reasons come
to remain shod
before my steps begin
before they venture far from the fold of linen and quilt.

Now
only with eyes peeled
do I step forward
never to hasten my way
into unknown realms
bare concrete,
carpeted surfaces,
sandy shores
are all that is left
to enjoy free as a child
barefoot tickles
of water trickles
in sandy pools created by gravity’s pull upon my footsteps.

Yet, even so,
age’s wisdom is close to taking its toll,
stealing this piece of peace
this realm of tranquility
from me.

I find myself
paining to hang on
to a bit of youth
a tiny moment more
for sanity’s joy.

Oh, VAS, do hang onto that moment!!! Those barefoot moments that we all remember can still be ours if we just take them into us. I love this one as much as I love running barefoot on the beach!!  Great job!!

Live...Love...Be grateful for both!!

VAS: very nicely written. I know that our communities are growing from field to concrete, but hang on to at least a memory of smiles.
