Listening to every heart

1962 and Blue Skies

one does things
for their parents because
of trust
for love
even when one would rather
not
“do” certain things

I recall one summer day
as it was an especially
bright
clear
blue yellow day

which of course only made
the grass that much greener

the dust I walked through
as I trekked to grocer’s
kicked up that much higher
sparkling as dust does when kicked
by toes clad in sneakers

even today
I wear sneakers
even today my jeans
are usually a little more
highwater than I prefer

oh, well

        1962 was still
not so far from the ‘50’s
and we didn’t think of
         nostalgia
in the commercial terms
as we do today

back then,
mom
        or dad
would call the grocer
and say
         “I’m sending my kid down”
and recite the list

including those things
to be picked up
that kids can’t ~ legally ~
pick up today if underage

I didn’t mind the walk
    I didn’t mind lugging back
one, or even two
    bags of groceries

           but sometimes
I would mind
what the bags contained

even worse, though,
were the times when I only
went for the “need”

that day I was only sent
for the “needed” item
so I talked to the Blue Skies
when I wasn’t quite
sure yet
who I could be talking to, but
only that someone should be listening

maybe I didn’t utter the
thoughts just right,
or yell loud enough
or silently, sufficiently
beseech
from my heart

         I wasn’t quite 11, yet
I knew I had to do what I was
told to do…
how does one ask the Blue Skies
to get one’s parents to stop smoking

even before the Surgeon General did?

          now……on really blue sky days
when the yellow really greens the
grass?

I still wonder if I was negligent.

I told the grocery teller, that my mother was drunk when I lost some of the money in route.  They called her up, my dad thought it was humorous, and couldn't stop laughing, buy mom was not all amused.  Off and on my dad still puffs away... mom quit. I'm glad to say they're both still here for me to enjoy. LP

I never had to buy any cigarettes for my Mom and my Dad chewed and bought his own.  But 1962 caught my eye.  It was a bad year in my life.  Joyce

I remember so very little about 1962, but I sure remember bugging my dad to quit smoking!  Thankfully he did,and lived a long and healthy life.

I remember those days, too...and begging my mother to stop smoking!  Thanks for the memory.

My parents never smoked...but I did...and I can remember my kids begging me to quit...and I did, for them.  I am so thankful!

No one can ever make someone do something they wish not to do, so the answer is no!  It would only have eliminated your need to protect them, but they surely would not quit until they themselves wanted to.  I remember 1962 like yesterday and I was puffing away then myself, as it was fashionable.  Blame the advertisers!  A good brain bender Sunshine!
