Sandstone Heart

It was only yesterday in my heart
as we drove through the redwoods
on the old back road.
You had an,
"I want to show you something,"
look in your eyes
as the sun slanted from tip of tree
to road, making paths in the air.
It was a magic-lit day
dappled and fern green.

You stopped beside the road
and said, come on,
and we walked into a forest,
quiet and touched by the sound
of a river.

You came to me on a fallen tree,
where I rested on its hard scratchy surface.
Your lips tasted like the dew touched petals
from the wild sweet peas that you had picked earlier
and laid into my loving feeling.

And then the sound of our breathing was all
I heard cascading around me
and I looked beyond your face
at the halo of the redwood forest around.
Oh, it was lovely love that day.

After, I looked beneath me
at the needle scattered ground,
looking to find a piece
of this time to take with me.
That’s when I found the sandstone rock,
heart shaped with perfect meaning.

It is the centerpiece that
gifts our table with a reminder
of how simple fragile things are cherished
into importance.

In the dew of little things,
the heart finds its morning
and is refreshed.
(ee cummings)

Beautiful, Martie. I think we should keep some small kind of keepsake for every event we wish to remember so that we can relive it with clarity just  by looking at whatever reminder we gathered...

love the pic!!! you got rid of that ugly background!! *wink *

Nothing like a walk in the forest, but didn't your Mom ever tell you there were bears in there!  How nice you have a momento, and a remember of how fragile many things are.  This was lovely Martie, enjoyed the walk.

Martie...the imagery in this is so awesome
I could smell the pine and the sultry forest floor...
this is such a cool poem..
the intend and the inspire ...
this is a sweet keeper my sweet poetess
me

There are two lasting bequests
that we can hope to instill in our children
one is roots ...
the other ... wings.

I do miss the redwoods.  Strange, how the sandstone rock [fragile] maintains a "giant" love affair....

Well done my friend....

but then, nothing less is expected.  Ever.

We have a long hiatus when 'Martie' poems are sparse - and 'Mirabile dictu' today I'm greeted by this!!!!!!!!!
If such absenses bring us poems such as this
I will gladly suffer missing daily doses of your work.  This is so wonderfully beautiful - I must 'mark' it in my treasure box  - as a poem I've nut found/seen - the equal of from you - or anyone else here

Martie,

I really liked this a lot and the stone just made all the better.
