Again, awake, teeth sore from clench
pillow damp in sweaty drench...
trembling hands in wipe of tears.
"Mom? Wake up. MOM? I'm here."

My son brings me a glass of juice.
"You were yelling out again,"
as he hands me my aspirin.
My little man--
I'm glad he's there.
He hands me well-worn teddy bear--
he keeps the bear now hid from view
beneath the bed next to his shoes.

Embarrassed by his offering,
he shrugged and said,
"It works for me,"
And quickly then
he kissed my cheek.
"Just try, Mom,
to get some sleep."

My little boy's
a little man--
I worry that
he understands.
It once was I
who held him tight
in comfort of
the screams of night.

I clutch the bear
and drink my juice
and think it might
work for me too.

Out of the mouths of babes Celeste. Beautiful tender poem. Thank God for the heart of that youngster, it restores faith in the human race and makes you so proud!
Have a nice day and tell that youngster I said he's going to be a good man!

The role of poetry is to utter the un-utterable; to open up
spaces of consciousness and resistance; to language oppressions; to
re-language historie

oh sen, this hurts and yet is so sweet at the same time...
the sharing of such a tender moment of both your pain and his innocence ...
heartstring strumming me twin

"I clutch the bear
and drink my juice
and think it might
work for me too."

it cant hurt baby ...
hugs me girlie
me

There are two lasting bequests
that we can hope to instill in our children
one is roots ...
the other ... wings.
