You came in and requested a table,
No service..
Just the low lights of a love in distress.
No waiter or waitress came to ask you,
What it was that you desired,
And yet you stayed.
Through it taking a while to get your drink,
Today's special "I want you, but I don't know if I love you,"
Poured in a tall glass and you had your own stirring device.
You watched as everything around you got darker,
And as the shadows began to come out,
Taunting you with the promise of fear,
Your strength drove them back into their doorways.
So,
Here you were at the table,
And when they brought you food you didn't order,
It wasn't even prepared,
Thick, bleeding and red,
On a strong hot plate,
Seasoned but not cooked yet.
Smiling and winking,
They told you had to watch out for raw meat,
And that sometimes people didn't have the stomach for it.
Yet you tried it
Bravely took your knife and fork,
Driving each with insistence into it.
The onlookers in the restuarant staring and snickering,
While you did so with zeal and patience.
Then a thought occurred to me.
I've always heard that raw meat was more tender.
And now the shadows are withdrawing under my command,
And I'm personally serving you this time,
With a smile and a fresh drink of "thank you" in an everlasting refill.

I really like this. . . I like the idea of it. . . the thought of the heart being served up "raw and unseasoned". . . a heart that's been hurt too many times so that it winds up this way. . . but, the lover, coming in and wanting it anyway, despite our efforts to tell them that it's not what they want. . . and then we discover. . . that they like it anyway. . .

excellent. . .

Thanks, Sven, but perhaps more a friend than a lover?   or some weird impossible mixture of both? I had more a friend in mind when writing this though.   Thanks.

A friend more than a lover?  Perhaps, but I thought that you were speaking of a lover here as well.

Still a great poem though.

Passion's Voice and Songbird,
A friend at first, then perhaps in some strange sense, a lover? I'm glad you're getting something out of it.   Thanks for reading.
