Clock’s Chime
Virginia Salter

the clock is chiming
“Get up, get up!”
it’s singing “awakeness”
to the morn

its ticking’s a metaphor
a beating heart of day
proclaiming a steadiness
to the pulse of being alive

sun glow shouts through
windows, from the east
rising up the day with arms
cheering energy

why cannot I catch it
why do I crave slumber so
must I become as tulip
reaching for every ray

to receive the warmth, the play
to carry through my hours
a power that is strong enough
to lift me to the night
