The earth feels old tonight
and we who stand on its cold rim
look toward the stars
and face a new year.

It is raining everywhere
as if the rain could wash it away
by some grave magic
make peace fall into our hair.

Open your hearts this night,
let the light therein shine brightly
so the path shall not be so dim.
Perhaps there is hope for such as we.

I say there is fine fresh stuff of faith,
a renewable garden where flowers bloom,
where we are warm
where we shall dance.

We who stand alone on this cold rim
shall go with the glow of our hearts,
we shall carry flowers,
we shall go on together.

And when they stop to search us,
their guns and searchlights ready,
we shall stand and sing
songs of hope, songs of survival.
