The Warship

A wide bay opens like a silk lined purse
Filled with clinking. Merchant vessels
Rattle chains dropping hooks
To anchor while awaiting berths
Where longshore crews with shirtless backs
Strain to muscle tightly stuffed cargo
Out of sweaty holds.
The harbor bulges with pent up work.
Block and tackle cross with cranes
Then double back to capitalize and gain
A purchase vast in its array. And yet
The scene gives way
To lines that sweep slowly aft,
Their casual curves a hint of hammocks
Swinging youths in summer.
Only the dull, gray hull and narrow look
Suggest a roll of freshly minted nickels
Clinched inside a fist.

Mam,

Is there anything as lovely...as the Battleship Missouri?   Smiling. Thank you. Bob
