The Ice and I

My shadows are entombed in fifty feet of snow
With bombers on a tarmac so many year ago
Standing in the midnight sun to watch them fly away
My shadow turned to ice as I blocked the sun its way.

Get a pick and shovel and removed the snow of host
You’d find me standing there an ice blue looking ghost.
Along side an ugly bomber soundless to your ear
But believe me when I say these sounds I still can hear.

I did not care and never gave a thought to growing old
But now I’m almost eighty and shiver in the cold.
And though it’s hard remembering happenings of today
My memory is a crystal clear of things of yesterday.

And soon I’ll past to history for those to read to know
But my shadow will remain in ice beneath the tons of snow.
And I never thought at twenty I’d build my monument
A novel one of ice and snow instead of pure cement

So if you ever feel, you want to know the truth
Then get a pick and shovel and dig me in my youth.

Sy, Very splendid write.  If my dad was living, I would share this with him, he was  in the Navy in WW2 and would be 85 now.

Just about the time I think I've read your best, you give us another gem... so let's not hear of age, dear Seymour... you're a young man with lots of experience and in your prime of talent! *S*

This is wonderful... and too important for me to make jokes... so I'll simply say that every layer you reveal is better than those we've already come to know and love. And I'll add a heartfelt THANK YOU. *S*

Sy,

I've seen one of those planes.  It was on display at a local airport here a few years ago.  This is a most wonderful write.  Such good work.

Have many memories of michigan,,, but only half that old.
But there is one thing i can say, i will never again shiver in the cold.
That is why i moved from the north to the south some odd years ago.
To mid florida to build other memories without any snow.

Liked your write..
I can remember 20 and hope when i get 80 or so i can still remember them......
