Meerkat Elucidation

bush babies, reminding
me of elongated
prairie dogs,
markings are a bit
different
but actions are about
the same…

so I imagine then,
as I perused a bit of Discovery
last eve
that I would empathize
should the prairie dogs I know
do what the Meerkats did

Bolder was her name
for she acted, as the matriarch
she was,
to be the primary
lookout,
not mother of all,
but mothered all
they were her children,
she was their guard

no adversary would come
to harm them
when she took post

her actions encompassed her
name
to the hilt! but, of course,
the story tilts

that even to the evening
when she fought off
a jackal who
thought her tribe an
easy prey
no way

no way

her members found her
the next morning
still guarding
boldly being Bolder, but
bleeding
torn, tattered, worn

they touched, tendered,
rendered care,
she was dying,
they licked, petted,
started crying?

they were starving,
and in need of food,
needed travel to find same,

come, Bolder, come

knowing her tribe’s need,
aware, but growing
weak, she
lumbered along
valiantly,
vainly still
the leader

but her tribe would not
could not
leave her alone

come, Bolder, come

and all members
slowed, showed
respect,

come, Bolder, come

‘round her they gathered,
in silence, hearts were heard
Meerkat hearts
touching, tendering, rendering,
love

Bolder drew away,
knowing it was time
knowing
showing her last bit
of strength
so that the strong
would go on

but they would not
let her be
would not
let her die
alone

come, Bolder, come

and the spirits of the Meerkats
who had gone before
who had fought a good fight
for their tribe,

now called,

and in silence,
deep, African silence
of what must be, to be,
she succumbed,
as they touched, and tendered, and rendered
love.

She was not alone.

Come, Bolder, come

I see that we watch the same channel!! I did miss this one, though, so I enjoyed reading it here in verse. I've often thought how wise humans would be to watch and learn from the more innocent creatures of this earth.
Wonderful write........

Live...Love...Be grateful for both!!

Wow, Sunshine!  This is a wonderfully touching poem.  I believe I saw this program a few months back and it touched me then.....but your poem....it got to me even deeper.
Great job. (I'm a bit at a loss for words here.)

I love Meercats - love the way they stand on their hind legs - looking around - looking for all the world like they would make wonderful pets - I wish I'd seen the show - You really brought them to life for me - so tenderly and beautifully

Sunnyone, thanks for reading!  This particular show had me in tears, the tenderness of the touching, lifting, pillowing of bodies to ease her comfort was so apparent....

Mike, that is the best compliment, thank you!

Interloper, you are not supposed to know that I need to lose weight....

Yes Mr. Yeats, they are amazing little critters, aren't they!

Mysteria, I think so too!  Thank you!
