Listening to every heart

Oh Yes!

no matter how mature
one gets
there should always be
a first
and from the first,
one should always be
willing to learn, or at the
very least,
acknowledge
what is good!
yes, a first time may well
set in motion
astonishing things to come
and enhance yet
other firsts

such it was then,
a first poetry reading,
and who would think that
a little city
could draw a two time
contender for a Pulitzer Prize
but they did,
and he was oh so good
with his Virginian accent
sweeping through
his free-verse poetry,

and was it because I wanted to
learn or perhaps since I
wanted to be moved or
maybe for the reason that I could
sit and be transformed
metaphorically

or was it because of you

or perhaps it was just my age

that it all made much more sense
now to me,
that I was able to follow the
wind and weave
and wend of
the lexis,
that I then valued oh so much more
this teller of tales
who colored,
then heightened,
his landscapes of delight
when all he really talked about
was dogs and fishing,
weddings and wars,
each a story unto themselves,
all which wound around
the fabric of his life

giving me the
unmitigated validation
that my life now
has
consequence

oh yes!

it would be inherent for me
to regale you easily
with the setting of the moment,
but I shall leave you to
imagine yourself,
for your contentment,
to situate your body in my place,

to be soothed and swept along
by that Virginia d-r-a-w-l,
low and rehearsed,
almost, almost bringing
along the slumbering smells
of old woods and gardenias,

and most certainly,
lost highways of time,

but I would rather, when you can,
enjoy the words of musically
inclined
verse
slung quietly along
in the writings of
Dave Smith.

I've only been to one live reading ... at least I think she was live ... it might have been lip sync ... either way it wasn't quite so impressive ... her voice was not poetic, although her poetry was
I've listened to some people who have wonderful voices ... they could read a grocery list and capture your complete attention as they seem to hit all the right nerves
If I did a reading, picture my poems with the voice of Quick Draw MaGraw

Karilea--I used to read my poetry at the local coffee house...but, I have a very soft voice and there was no microphone...it was a great experience though.  I loved your poem..that's just the way it should be.

See?? I told you that you'd like it!!  LOL

This is great Sunshine. . . there's nothing like a poetry reading. . . to hear the voice of the poet read the words as they were meant to be heard. . .

Everyone should go to a reading in their town or city if they're able. . . and for those of us brave enough to do so. . . share your poetry with others at an Open Mic night!!  I do. . . there's nothing like it. . .

Great poem my friend. . .

Ah Rex, you are so right...so much more to a poem when the voice can help with the vision...I work a lot on my voice...and sometimes I can even transcend the "shy"...

Yes, SunSis...I had an excellent time...now will ALL readings be so worthwhile? The optimist in me says "well, why not?" LOL...thanks!

Yes, Mr. Yeats, I fully expect to indulge in more as time and occasions permit! Thank you for sharing your insights....

Interloper...prolly not!

Gentle Spirit, I can indeed say that Mr. Smith had a "way with words..."

Martie, that is only something I can aspired towards....I tip my quill to you!

JM, if you ever have the occasion to read his works, I would say, "good buy!"

SEA!  Come along!....

yes Sven, I had read your previous outings, and sagaciously took your advice! I imagined, while there, that so many of you would have enjoyed it as much as I did!

JLR, you are, Sir, most welcome!
