We drove and drove south to the Keys and then we drove some more.
Deer said I'd see some places that I'd never been before.
Seemed hours passed before we crossed the seven mile bridge
By then we wished that we had thought to bring food from the fridge.

Deer said, "That restaurant's really great - They've got a grand buffet!"
By then we'd passed it, so I said, "We'll just come back this way"
We had no choice on that of course, there's one road in and out
So I looked forward to a feast once we had turned about.

On Deer Key now - no Big Macs there, just yucky Burglar King
Instead of feasting we just got some coke and chicken wings.
Back on the road southwestward bound, we crossed the last causeway.
The end of earth before us standing drenched in sunshine's ray.

Around about we drove and stopped of course at Southernmost.
There is no more US ends here - I've now toured all East Coast.
Then what to do and what to see - We'd start with Hemingway.
Without a doubt, no questions asked - That really made the day.

This stately mansion even now the finest on the isle,
A paradise in paradise - Kicked back and stayed awhile...
The essence still pervades today of "Old Man and the Sea."
Best friend and captain living still is now one hundred three.

The six-toed cats remain as well now numbered sixty-one.
They grace the gardens and the grounds, all basking in the sun.
The spirit of Sir Hemingway does surely emanate
From every corner of his home his artefacts equate.

Envisioning his catwalk to his writing studio,
We followed Ernest's proclaimed route and trod to "Sloppy Joe's"..
Amazing to experience the stroll down Street Duval.
We laughed at Ernest's dragging 'long a rusty urinal...

We wandered 'bout and bought some stuff so we'd recall this day.
I'm grateful to have seen the world of Ernest Hemingway.
But then, of course, 'twas time to go, "It's getting late," thought we...
Then drove in circles for awhile - No exit from the Key!

We never found that grand buffet while we were driving back
We snuck in "Snook's" instead to dine - We had enough Big Macks...
We found our way - 'Twas a long day - and now I'm sure it's true.
That "You can leave Key West, but then Key West will not leave you.."

Nan: I'm envious... not just of your trip to Key West (though that's enough to envy *G*) but for this chance you have to visit those fine Florida poets. *G* Great poem... I'm glad y'all had fun! (ROFL @ Big Mack *G*)

Nan,
Your poem was wonderful to read
And I'm sure I'll read it again
If and when I feel the need.
You had the deer a better host than most
And saw Key West the ending of our coast.
I'm sure you will store the memory
As I surely as I of meeting thee
But as you say it's not over yet
And I'm hoping that I'll see you pet
For another Kiss and hug and squeeze
And whatever else you damn please.

The Keys are beautiful. You make me wish I was there again.  Happy traveling.

ROFL @ Kamla!  Nan, this was wonderful ... you've told of your journey in a wonderfully rhythmic form, it was a joy to read  ... loved this!  Glad you're all having such a great time. Now where can I get my hands on one of those Big Macks?

Best wishes,
/Kit

Nan - nice to see that you made it back, safely and with gusto!  Sounds as if you're trip was relaxing and just what was ordered.  See any lighthouses down that-a-way?  Perhaps one or two to run, run around!  Hehehe!
