Wrong Turns

wrong turns
are so diverse
from bad decisions
or ill-fated happenings ~
God probably created
wrong turns because He has
a sense of absurdity
and likes to proffer surprises

such is the stuff of memories then,
look back on wrong turns

one in kind was a domestic vacation,
before disbandment of siblings
fast approaching

long road trip for memories, then,
from west to midwest,
to check out roots and
cousins who kept steadfast
and alive all traditions

early risers, all five of us,
embarking upon the
highways at O-dark-thirty,
to drive before breakfast,
which would provide us
gargantuan appetites

folks were great at sharing
so it was mother’s good fortune to be blessed with
The Wrong Turn
for after all, going up over a mountain
is so much easier than
going around the mountain, right?

wrong turn memories now
cascade just like the mountain
streams that were in full
flush that June morning,
brilliant sun melting higher
peakfilled snows, and
chillingly burbled alongside the two lane
blacktop

can you smell the fresh?

sunlight in early morning
made the maples
and birch take on a showing glow
of sheen that lead me on to
look for fairies dancing on leaves
to create such
beauty ~ look at them bounce!

but the meadow! ~ we whispered
stop
and she did ~
for we were small city kids
and rare were the moments of
gazing upon deer held in by air only ~
no fence nor cage to peer through
or over

white tailed deer and speckled fawn
grazed in grasses that waved slight
in soft morning breezes,
all motion shimmering
‘neath dappling shadows
amid early summer flowers
left from spring’s birth,
rainbow myriads
of purple, pinks and blues

Hello Bambi, where’s Thumper?
had we brought Disney to the Rockies?

barely breathing and only just containing
delighted giggles, we held fast from
dispelling the moment
made even more whimsical that
all five of us were,
in a moment’s solitude,
held in a memory’s togetherness,
brought about by a
wrong turn

and we never forgot to thank
mother for
going over the mountain

Each word, a vehicle furthering the journey, a pure pleasure throughout.
