Amazing Memories how far? how far can you return to a time that was yours and his, alone? I can go back decades when it was just him and I taking care of the house, “sprucing up,” he called it, a big grin under that big nose, under that dark hair and blazing blue eyes tall, he was so tall, and he would take me up in his arms and dance me around our little house, just him and his girl… our love we wore like cloaks, keeping us warm in the silence we only had a few days of this oneness, this special time, when one day, he came home and said, “I’ll get ready, and we’ll go” and I was about to lose my best guy, and our times of special… so as he prepared by shaving, splashing his Old Spice on a firm, smooth face, putting on a crisp clean shirt, I sat and watched him and my heart swelled with love as it never had before. He was mine, and no one would ever have that moment with him. Just him and me. Soon we left, and he carried me up high on his shoulders, so the smells of the hospital would not frighten me, for I was in a place that normally kids did not go, a hospital, to see my mother since my brother’s birth, and my Dad had this way with him, promising the nurses I would not be a problem and he was so right. Mother did not come through hard times well, and she did not look her pretty self, there in the bed, but rather a wan, weak woman, and I think I realized then, that I would be the stronger of the two of his girls, but when I looked at Dad, and he looked at the love of his life, I knew I was only his girl, and not his true love. But from that age of two, I book-marked a moment in my mind, one that I shall never forget, one that was ours, alone. |

What an incredible, vivid memory...filled with feeling. My relationship with my own father is at best strained or civil. Though I can't miss something I never had, your poem tells me that I missed something very special. Speak when you are angry--and you'll make the best speech you'll ever regret...Laurence J. Peter |

Treasures of the mind. Live for love. Without love, you don't live. |
