The Box

Under my bed,
on the right side
is a box.

Old and dusty,
it hasn't been opened
for awhile.

Inside lie memories
of pain,
love,
heartaches
and laughter.
Tears, both of joy
and sadness.

One day,
I decided to open it
and reminisce.

I lifted the lid,
flipped through photos,
newspaper clippings,
and the old
birthday cards.

On the bottom,
under
everything else,
just what I feared.

The oldest memory.

The one that started
the box.

An obituary, Franklin D. Godbee.
My grandfather.
He made the box
for me.

Together
we stained it.

Oh God, how I remember!

The pain
is too strong,

I close the lid,
slide the box back under the bed,
on the right side,
where it remains to this day.

Destiny,

Wonderful story of love of family, tender and nicely done.  Thanks for sharing this special memory, my friend.
