Deer at Dawn

Summer each year
for the past ten
Means at least one wondrous week
Renting a cottage - at the shore

One big enough
For the kids
And the grand kids

It means big family meals
Sunburns, sand castles
Searches for tiny marine life
Shady reading while listening to
Dolphin's breeching off shore
Or the surf at sunset

For me
An added pleasure
pedaling through
the state park
while the rest of the vacation crowd
still sleeps

A refuge for wildlife
The deer are so tame
They barely raise their heads
Let alone retreat in the brush
As I cruise silently by

At the easternmost point
The park extends
Into the Atlantic
A bird sanctuary
An ancient lighthouse
And an Osprey platform

Thus I commune
Find peace
From the hectic
Rowdy games of the youngin's
Drift off into
My favorite fantasies

You on your bike
Leading me on
And voyeuristic Deer

The first duty of love is to listen.

Thank you for the tour. I enjoyed it very much. I've never been on the east coast I'm sure it's quite lovely this time of year.

A rather wicked twist of reverie at the end of this serene account, Wilfred. Thanks for the  surprise.

Texas - California  - ??

'wicked?'  - I wrote this without a scintilla of fiction.

and right now - my city window regales mew with blossomed trees and colorful singing birds -
no question in my mind: God's in His  heaven - and all's right with the world -
yet my last line fantasy remains

Thank you
