“I’m crossing by moonlight”,
I told her and kept my voice low.
“The Rangers are coming-
I’m headed for old Mexico”.

A price for my capture-
A thousand in gold on my head.
In a land where a dollar-
Had got more than one person dead.

An outlaw, and rustler
Was what they had called me for years.
I have to admit it-
I’ve stolen my share of their steers.

But last week in Blanco-
An old rancher challenged my hand-
My six-gun was quicker-
I left him stretched out on the sand.

Murder they called it,
The Rangers are hot on my trail...
I must make Coahuila-
My life is the price if I fail.

I’ll send for Maria-
The girl who’s the light of my life-
Somewhere in Sonora-
I’ll take time to make her my wife.

Wait! I hear the horses-
They come at a lope down the street.
My pride outweighs judgment...
I’ll step out the posse to meet.

Here, in Laredo,
Is where I will make my last stand-
No crossing the Rio-
I’ll die with my gun in my hand.

I know she will visit-
She’ll weep by my grave on Boot Hill-
When the full moon is blazing-
And South Texas breezes are still.

From where I am buried-
‘Neath six feet of South Texas sand-
You can see my refuge-
The course of the old Rio Grande.

Darn why did you cowboys always go for a girl named Maria? Look at all us females that were left out of the song. If you wait long enough the Rio Grande will go run over its banks and wash away the Old Gunslinger.
Always enjoy a good cowboy song, thanks.
