What is pain; it is a feeling
Not able to be defined with words
I've lived; therefore I've felt pain
Pain is ever changing and multiplies
Just as you think you know it
To your surprise, it can get worse

A child of nine, I felt my mother's pain
My sister died; so died a part
My mother's heart; her soul
I heard her cry; a cry of despair
Agonizing pain, but not the worst

As an adult I felt pain again
Like a ghost or demon it slipped in
I watched my marriage fall apart
My world crumbled into dust
Nothing was certain any more
Who was I; pain ruled my heart
But it was not the worst

I'm older now, more patient
More sober, reflective
Understanding that I know nothing
I've lived longer, seen more
More satisfied with who I am
What life is all about

Into that self-satisified state
Pain has come again
Ripping through my heart
Without anesthetic; without remorse
Oh God this pain is the worst
For words cannot communicate
It is a feeling;not a word

Crushed in its encircling coils
Fear chasing fear inside
Nothing remains but fear and pain
I must be strong; stand firm
Trapped in the name of love
This pain is the great destroyer
This pain will drive me insane
This pain will remain.

I've never felt this type of pain, hope I never do.

I know this pain....don't let it drive you insane.

peppermint35 - my sister passed away also, very young, never reached the age of seven. I also know pain, too much in fact, and wonder "Does it ever end?"
