My Friend, Auguste

The day we met I was sitting in
my old brown chair
with the familiar squeak.
Out the window was the day,
probably an ordinary day,
I don’t remember if light fell
across the carpet the way it does
in the morning,
or if the rain sang in the patio,
but I do remember friendship.
Not all of a sudden like a hand shake,
but gradual as a smile
that starts first in the heart
and last comes into the eyes.

His gentle poetry captured me
and I knew so much of him
just by reading what he said.
So I took a chance and knocked
at friendship’s door to see
if he would open it and see me
standing there just saying hi.

Now he is a part of my day,
his treasures bring me happiness,
and his tears make me weep,
he teases me until my laughter
bounces around the walls
and my dog barks at me
thinking me ready for a game,
and I thank him for that fun.

He is a friend who listens
to my sighing past and wants to injure
those who’ve injured me,
who tells me when I’m lost,
running down the path where too many
blossoms grow and the grass is so high
that my very thought is lost
in a maze of my own making.
He find me there and pulls me out
and shakes me until all the leaves fall
from me and I stand tall
beside some truth.

I think that’s what friends are for.

Your thinking is loud, clear, and eternally soft...

and you did quite right, knocking on that door!

He will love it!

The weaving of this piece is magical, Martie, evoking the magic of the weaving of this friendship.  Love, too, should be based on no less than what is encapsulated here.  I love this poem, its tenderness, its profound beauty.  May I save it in my favorite's file?  Oh, there are three words that should have had esses on them to agree with the subject, but you've probably already caught that.
He find(s) me there and pull(s) me out
and shake(s) me until all the leaves fall
from me and I stand tall
beside some truth.

What a treasure this is! And it sounds like you and your friend each found a treasure the day you went knocking. And I agree...this is what friends are for.
