~*~ The Venetian Lady ~*~

As she cradled herself with the tattered blanket,
Her eyes lovingly drifted to her treasure.
Out of the corner of her eye,
a mouse scurried to break her concentration.
“Not tonight” she said, “for I travel!”
Every night before bed she would perambulate,
smelling fresh flowers, the sea, the air.
Quickly she dressed up in her finest silk.
Now ready, she would go to meet him.
He would offer a white-gloved hand to her,
guiding her gently into the gondola.
Lazily, and romantically they drifted,
two hearts, on one mission of love.
Fine wine and books accompanied them.
Her heart was so overflowing with love,
spellbound, as he softly read to her.
He read to her of love, their love, their future.
Ebony skies ablaze overhead, were so slowly,
being crowned in a sparkling tiara of stars.
As they drifted along the canal,
the gondola music played softly of their love.
In the moonlight, their love's testament,
had reverberated from water to sky.
Was there any finer lady anywhere in Venice?
Suddenly with a thundering crash,
The lid fell on the dumpster!
One single tear escaped her eye.
For just one fleeting second,
she wondered where he was now, if he was happy.
Holding her treasure close to her heart,
She cradled the painting of Venice.
Slowly, she covered it lovingly in newspaper,
holding it close to her bosom to keep it safe.
She pulled herself into a ball.
This true Venetian lady, now sadly,
just a poor, lonely, homeless soul.
She settled down for another cold night,
in the land that compassion has forgotten.

Am I the mouse or the gondoleer?

Quite a tale you spun.  I love it when there is an abrupt change taking the reader unexpectantly down a different path.  Sharpens the mind.

Well done, again!

Oh, the poor dear.  Yes, I suppose the only thing that makes life bearable for someone in her circumstance would be dreams of what has been or what might have been.  You surprised me with the abrupt change in the story.  Very well done.Joyce

Enjoyed reading this...I wonder if homeless people have lost their dreams or they still count on their dreams as a method of survival...James

Joyce: Thank you for getting the reason for the story, and that is quite the question isn't it?  I appreciate you taking the time to read this.

James: I really hope the homeless have dreams, and if not, there are those that make sure the get them!  A very sad situation in this day and age of wealth and prosperty, that we don't share more.

Heart grabber !
The softness of the music led me slowly through this gentle read.
Very compassionately portrayed, my dear friend.

Mysteria, I think this may be my favorite of all you've written. The music was quite melodic and haunting almost, I loved it! This is a treasure for sure.

Blessings
