Blemish

Footprints strewn across sands of the soul,
abused innocence
to blemish the skin,
vision of life, shaded in frayed grey
in honour of misery within,
wide-eyed optimism departs,
so that ugliness may impart
sores upon the face
haunting the heart -
stricken in disgrace
with memories of childhood

A Swan in Yellowstone After the Fire

The ridge crept down,
Scarred,
Bent,
Frightened so,
Its trees straight sticks like quills erect
On the back of a porcupine.
With all its vast disfigurement
I wondered why it drew so near,
Daring, even, to overlook
And peer
Into a mirror far below.
