to understand the light, you must know the dark
for there cannot be one without the other
no joy without pain
          no life without death
                    no love without hate
in the teachings of the one are the lessons of the other
they exist side by side in the universe
but it is where they meet that we discover what and who we are
there, we learn the secrets of life
there, we know ourselves
there, we are asked the greatest questions
and there, we are given,
                          the greatest answers

look and watch the joining of the two into not only many
          joypain     life death     lovehate
but also into other many
          joyhate     lifepain     lovedeath
the possibilities as endless as the universe
the feelings as deep as the cosmic ocean
the awakenings as vibrant as the star of life
a realm of the mind, but not of intellectualism
a realm of the heart, but not of feelings
            a realm of intellectual feelings
                         and feelings of intellect
it is the realm of the soul

for only the soul can truly bridge the gap between the
          mind and the heart
the divide between feelings and intellect

all paths lead to the soul
but do we bother to follow them?
no
we follow the path of intellect, but find that it cannot explain love
we follow the path of feelings, but find that it cannot explain creation
the path of the soul follows both of these
                  and finds understanding

and in understanding
we find ourselves
we learn that the darkness serves not only to cause pain
but also serves to hide and heal the one in pain
we learn that the light serves not only to heal the pain
but also serves to reveal the cause of that pain
and, in that place, between darkness and light
we learn that the darkness and the light must coexist
that there are things that need to be seen
that there are things that need to be hidden
and in the revealing
          we learn about ourselves
we learn that we are not just people
we learn that we are human

Such truth in your words this evening.  We cannot know one without the other.  Very well done.

Excellent writing.

Interesting, Sven Pen!   Many lessons to be learned here in this.

Sven~ maybe we sould lead with our souls instead of the mind or the heart.....maybe a combination of soul, heart and mind....is that possible? Is it selfish to only think with the  heart, or the mind, and not a combination? Are we only hurting ourselves? Or the ones we love? Ahhhhhhhha!! It's too early for this   No, really, you made me think about lots of different things, and I will for the day. Very cool write here Sven!! I like this very much   SEA

Yes!, You speak of the balance in life, and it is through the soul that we can achieve that balance. And the depths of pain and the heights of joy are all valid, but the soul can keep all questions, all discoveries, all sentiments, all aesthetic notions in balance.
I like the subject matter of this piece

Hi Sven,

My souls path has been very rockey of late and so I have no profound reply but am going to copy this and read much for there is much wisdom in it and know I treasure it,

Is it a coincidence that I read this on Good Friday? I doubt it, there could have never been Easter Sunday (the resurrection of Christ) without Good Friday(his crucifixion)
And that is what this poem makes me think about, in order to set ourselves free, we need to experience negative things as well.Very inspiring work!

A quarter of a century must pass, for the writer to understand what and why he writes.

Oh my goodness Sven, I am simply in awe. This is absolutely wonderful.  You've woven such wisdom and truth throughout this beautiful piece ... truly, truly loved how you captured so much and brought your sentiments full circle to a wonderful closure. This was a splendid read Sven, very much enjoyed, very thought provoking!

Best wishes,
