This Piece of Creation
Virginia Salter

green spears jut from the earth
red blossoms mingle within
dusty miller lazily drapes over the side
of a rich, brown tub
as magenta phlox stands the center
in profuse array of color

clematis sprawls across the bed
having not found its climbing place
daffodils begin to shrivel their heads
announcing their demise
their ceding to the tulips of spring to rise

the mercury rose to a lusty eighty-one this day
as young, active vegetation began clamoring for drink
and the rosebushes spewed forth shoots of promise
that beg for pruning and tender care
and I feel so inadequately aware
of just the right touch needed
to care for this piece of creation

VAS, how wonderful to let us have a glimpse of spring even if it hasn't reached where we live, yet.  You gave us a beautiful picture.  Thanks,  ME

A beautiful touch of spring poetry to end a positively lovely weekend up here in Ontario. We hit wonderful temperatures today, and this poem was perfect in its timing. Very nicely written Virginia!

Best wishes,
/Kit

Thank you all so much!  Your words are beautiful and gratefully received.  This was written last April, but today things looked much the same, save for the 81 degree temp.  We didn't make that one, well I don't think so anyway, the wind chill factor obliterated any thought of seeking a thermometer to see how 'warm' it had gotten. Plus, this year I've already pruned the one rose bush of which I was writing.  Got to remember I have three others to do, also.
