Her red cape fluttering behind,
the lady of the manor went
up steps to see what she would find
to view from lofty battlement.
An army clamored down below
and their encampment took her breath.
But she was bound she wouldn't show
the fear she felt inside, of death.

Then she went back down to the ground
and called her brave and stalwart band.
As soon as they were gathered round,
she told them calmly what she planned.
A tunnel in the lower keep
provided them a safe retreat,
to come out in the forest deep,
accomplishing a daring feat.

Then with the great gate swept beside,
the enemy, with shouts of glee,
all rushed so eagerly inside,
to see what plunder there might be.
They stripped the castle of it's wealth.
They ate and drank as evening fell.
It was injurious to their health.
She left behind a poisoned well!

Oh, Trillium why aren't you writing Victorian novels.  And the surprise at the end.  Great.  Joyce

Joyce: Thank you and I wish I had more time to write, as I would love to attempt a Victorian novel.  I have one novel written, but it's based in South Africa. I hope to find a home for it one day.
