Smudge Pots

They look like stumps,
Such that
From the vantage point of plump RVs,
Tourists comment,
"They ought to dig those up!"
We saw them differently.
Remember?
I brought blankets.
You brought books.
Even then you needed words for warmth.
All night you ravished me with poems
As I sat staring at the smoke
Creeping up the valley,
Putting out the stars
And covering the blossoms
Against the approach
Of war.

The mysterious of romance, captured so well here.

This:

Even then you needed words for warmth.

Fabulous.

Fantastically woven, Bob.  There were still orchards near hear with smudge pots until a short time ago.  I rather miss seeing them as I passed.  Never had the romanticism of sitting by them with a significant other, though.  That really brings out the nostalgic feeling of loss.  Lovely memory, edged with the painful memory of impending war. Amazingly written.  You are such a master.
