Swinging from rafters, jumping off roofs,
What will my child think of next?
All I am sure of, is that it will be,
Something I couldn't expect.

Riding her horse through the Swinomish Slough,
Water skiing with her leg in a cast,
I send her out there, with my hands clasped in prayer.
How long will these pre-teen years last?

And then the real teens come upon us too soon.
Am I really ready for this?
Her first date, her first dance and now I suppose,
There'll be that first sweet sixteen kiss.

The years roll along, and with them my child,
Where is that tomboy of the past?
I admire the young woman my daughter's become,
But why did she grow up so fast.

And then ere too long, she's  lovely young bride.
In another few years she's a mother.
All of the lessons I tried hard to teach,
Have borne fruit, in some way or another.

I thought she wasn't hearing the words as I spoke,
When I wanted to show her the way;
She was always so carefree, but somehow she did.
She's a wonderful mother today.

Joyce, this is wonderful!!  I have 4 daughters and I went through all of these feelings many, many times.  I talked until I was blue in the face and was sure they heard not a word!  Well, they all have lovely daughters of their own, now. I am sure they are doing alot of talking and praying.  I love this poem and your words.  Thank you for sharing.  Hugs,  ME

Thanks everyone for reading and commenting on "My Child".  She was such a joy but so daring.  She has three daughters of her own now and has raised them with love and understanding.  Joyce
