Lesson Learned (from Boyhood Tales) Growing up is always hard. Learning life's lessons, harder still. Colleen was a lesson in boy-girl relationships. A lesson learned, hard. When she looked at me I got all warm and squiggly inside. Sparkling bright blue eyes saw my soul, sent shivers up and down my spine, hung me over the brink of wanting, longing… what I knew of love was eating me alive, bashfulness between me and her, kept my desires, needs, tied in knots. Tongue-tied, muttering, wanting only to run I struggled to be like others, personable, outgoing, entertaining, a real person, but at best, my efforts were never known. Finally, after much prodding and coaxing, having been assured she'd say yes, I stood on my tongue and asked her 'out', gave her my ring, then all but ran away, falling into a miasma of profound, bashful, fear. I dropped off the earth when it came to her. I couldn't face her, talk with her, be near her, and then I died when she handed back my ring saying her parents said she couldn't go steady, she was sorry… She clutched my hand, kissed me gently on the lips, turned, walked out of my life. We were in the seventh grade… I failed that year, even the lesson I learned. w. james beard, jr. © February 2001 |

Ah, the memories, jwesley, you conjure up. Didn't have my first date until I was a Junior in high school. Sports was my life...went to the drive-in movie with a cheerleader...double-dating with me and my date in the back seat.. Halfway through the movie she rolls over on top of me and I pushed her across the seat and said "What are you doing??" Last date with her, needless to say. I've never pushed one away since |

Go find her! Obviously she still takes up your thoughts. This was excellent, and you've brought it flooding back to so many. <*\\\>< |

Thank you all...kinda put a lot of the shyness away, but it's still more of a plague than it should be...holds me back in a lot of ways....but, I can live with it, now. jwesley |
