The Way I Moved Through the World

I walked alone downtown today
Though the shops were mostly closed
Paused before the windows where we’d stood

Looked to my side, remembered you there
And walking on
I wondered
At the heaviness of my step
Though the day
Was light and warm

It came to me
That I move differently
You no longer by my side
A subtle consumption of my soul is now reality
Yet I spare you most the pain

Instead, I write it out
In words you rarely read
And even when you do
You don’t realize it’s me

The way I moved through the world
Was different

When you walked by my side

I was young, again…in love, again
Believing we would never lose

Speak when you are angry--and you'll make the best speech you'll ever regret...Laurence J. Peter

You leave the reader much to ponder on, JLR, with this writing.  I compliment you!

JLR,

Thank you for sharing the walk with us.  We never do see the reality of it coming until it is too late.  I guess if we did, we might not take that chance.  Good writing.

it's always different when you move by yourself. . . but, when we learn to move by ourselves. . .we learn how to move with someone else better. . .

great poem!!!

Yes, Sven is right, we do move differently when alone, I know I do. Your poem was so very lovely JLR. Words have a way of healing my soul, I hope your words might heal yours.

Great poem!

There is such a difference between being lonely and alone, and once you get the hang of it, being alone and enjoying yourself becomes a wonderful thing.  However, the transition from one to the other is heavy on one's heart, and you captured this beautifully.  Bravo!

I really like this...it moves so nicely down the screen - excellent!
