Permanence

As I sit,
Awaiting what seems terminal to start,
While the screen flits from light to dark to light again,
"I hold the thought"
Of pain.
Not of a kind that breaks the heart,
But something soft,
Like damp
Before it sets its mind to rain
On a Saturday morning.
There are some hurts that should remain,
If only as a means of comparison.
And so I find I'm going back
To once again try to appreciate
The beauty in such simple things
As the difference between a man and woman's penmanship.
I miss the sense a postmark brings
Of solid ground; of trust;
Of knowing that it takes
One day from here, two days from there
To express concern
Or interest.
I miss the stamps,
And stil recall when some in love
Would turn them upside down
(As if a parent couldn't tell).
I'm going back to envelopes
And keeping them in line in cubicles
To make my desk seem purpose full.
Does it seem strange to feel neglect
More keenly in a string of jokes
Forwarded electronically
Then in an empty mailbox?
And yet I do. I miss so much
What felt like pain while waiting on the sidewalk
To hurry love along its route.
I want the permanence that waits,
Though it make take a day or two,
To breathe the true perfume
Of you.

This is so wonderfully superb, Bob!  I too like the stanza JLR chose AND the last one especially much!

May I take a copy of this one Bob.  It is wonderful!!!!  E-mail me if I may, cuz this will go down the board quickly, not because it won't be read, but because so much activity will carry it there.

Bob,

There is nothing like the real thing.  Yes, e-mail is fast and all, but you don't get to see the words written by the other person's hand.  They are just typed on a screen.  I think they mean so much more when someone takes the time to write them out and mail them to you.  You have something you can keep forever then.  Wonderful!!

We've touched on this subject before.  I agree completely.  A very nice write, Bob.  I miss getting letters in the mail.

It can be a cold medium, and lord knows there's plenty of room for misunderstanding in any mode of communication, but alas, it appears to be here to stay. Look at the near instant gratification! The lack of a need for a stamp! Not wondering if the postal service will come through!

But still, something lacks, yes.

Sven, Indiana, and Corinne...thank you all for your comments.

Lone Wolf...special thanks to you for I think you have touched on the heart of the matter....my, such a phrase..."the heart of the matter"... with your observations concerning the fact that letters take time and leave us with something to keep. With e-mail there is an inherent, nearly irresistable potential for brevity that....how to describe it....that somehow colors, almost taints the correspondence. When was the last time you received a letter that closed with "gotta run"? It is a question of investment isn't it. The e-mail will never carry a truly wonderful love letter. Never. Whereas the postman, well.....it goes without saying. Gosh, I'm sorry. Better leave that subject "back in some attic drawer or chest" in the future.   Bob

PS to all. I'm so disappointed...not a single comment on "..hold the thought..." See, too much time bursting out e-mails and precious little time watching "An Affair To Remember"....(Grant and Kerr..."hold the thought".)   Bob
