He got to town, late afternoon,
best I recall, was late in June,
had hitched a ride, from who knows where,
now stood alone on courthouse square.

Down Walnut Street, the stranger walked,
while all the while, onlookers gawked,
for in small towns, a stranger's rare,
must be prepared for townfolk's stare.

His only clothes, were on his back,
wore faded cap, that once was black,
short greying beard, revealed his age,
as he walked down, a small town's stage.

Across the tracks. sat Rock'n'Bar,
old man Jones, got in his car,
since end of shift, had tipped a few,
Milwaukee's best, his favorite brew.

Had seen the judge, was back in May,
A simple glance, the other way,
A good old boy, no harm no foul,
was not a drunk, out on the prowl.

The hearse was black, like faded cap,
No harm no foul, ain't life a snap,
had hitched a ride, from who knows where,
I sit alone, in courthouse there.

Your Honor....

I sense .... something ....

that I shall not speak of, but which is looming....

and you are in my thoughts.....

Forgive me for coming so late to this somber poem. I don't know how I missed it. Good writing, my friend.
