I got tired of the party...it was moving kind of slow.
I walked toward the front door and prepared myself to go
When...there she stood...in front of me. She had a small tattoo,
A red heart on her cheek containing three words..I LOVE YOU.

Her look told me she had been watching me for quite a while.
Her green eyes sparkled brightly - I was dazzled by her smile.
I knew then that I had to know the real woman who
Was there behind the heart tattoo that spelled out I LOVE YOU.

We dated off and on for months. What wondrous days they were!
I'd never felt so happy as the days I spent with her.
Then we moved in together for there was no doubt I knew
No one had loved me like the woman with the heart tattoo.

The months flew by - the seasons changed - the new years came and went.
We wrapped ourselves in Love's coccoon that felt so heaven-sent.
Her eyes glowed at me lovingly and, always in full view,
The red heart blazed on dimpled cheek that spelled out I LOVE YOU.

It dawned on me, through all that time, that I'd heard no one speak
One word about that tattooed heart she wore there on her cheek.
I mentioned this and she just smiled and said, "I thought you knew....
The message on my face is only visible to you."

My God! She'd known it right away! She'd loved me from the start!
The love shine on her face to my eyes took the shape of heart
And everything she felt for me came magically in view
So much that, as I looked at her, it spelled out I LOVE YOU!

I laughed so hard I cried - what magic she had given me
To wear her love so openly that only I could see.
I pulled her to me as I whispered, "Hon, I love you, too"
Then kissed the cheek that wore the heart that spelled out I LOVE YOU.

Then one night, after fitful sleep, I woke up with the dawn
And, as I glanced upon her face, the heart tattoo was gone!
I shook her and said, "Your tattoo! Oh, baby, where'd it go?"
The sad look on her face then told me all I'd need to know.

She has remarried. We're still friends. We speak once in a while.
The only thing on her face now that I see is a smile.
And me? I go through life with hopes of finding someone who
Might have a heart upon her cheek that spells out I LOVE YOU.

Balladeer, you were so lucky once do you think you will get another chance?  I hope so and I know you will keep looking.  Your words are great and make us all wish it was possible to find the "I love you" heart on our next love.  Hugs,  ME

Your "craft" is showing!  This was wonderful.  In answer to the search for the cheek with the tattoo, if she is the right one, the tattoo will be her heart, and only you will see it!

My Main Man Balladeer... another perfect view of the poet that is you.  Been there a time or two myself.  I bow to you and yours, but I must leave you with this one bit of wisdom... one's love for another must be seen by all if it is to remain... but then you knew that.  Peace my friend.

Balladeer,
You know I saw that tattoo once, it's still there but the wording changed. Wonderful write. Now there is an idea for a sequel.

You've penned another beauty here, ya scoundrel. *S* One that wraps the reader in your words from start to finish... At first, I was wishing if only it were that easy... true love should always be so readily visible to the recipient. *S* But then... to think of waking and seeing those words gone forever... well, that starts sounding more like my life. *G* Great work, Deer one!

My husband read this to me and then walked over to give me a hug and thank me, for he could see "I love you" tattooed in my eyes.
Mr Deer, you're just so darn sweet.
